Spiritual Direction

What is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual direction is two people listening together to the Holy Spirit as spiritual friends and companions. Further, it's a conversation between two people where one is seeking to help another to deepen their friendship with God.

Your director is focused on creating an environment where you can hear and respond to the voice of the Holy Spirit. As David Benner says, “Discerning the presence and leading of the Holy Spirit is the central task.” The primary goal of these conversations is to lead you to a deepening relationship with God.

God loves you and is always at work in your life. You are His Beloved and He desires that you grow and deepen that relationship with Him. Spiritual direction helps one be alert to and make sense of the happenings of everyday life. The goal is to be more attentive to what God is doing and saying.

We meet not to problem-solve, or fix, but to observe life, discover God in that life, and be attentive to his promptings. Our focus is on God and his subterranean work in your inner life.

Process of Spiritual Direction

Spiritual direction is an ongoing conversation that takes place over a number of months. It is a spiritual conversation with a soul companion that leads a deeper relationship with God through prayer, listening, and silence in a grace-filled atmosphere of love. Through conversation, questions, observations and suggestions for the spiritual journey, a spiritual director helps you center in on God and listen to the voice of His Spirit.

Dialogue continually moves from the surface to the depths, from the external to the internal.

Preparation for a Spiritual Direction Session

You prepare prayerfully and with anticipation that God will meet with you in the direction session. Remember, of course, that God’s Spirit is the Director and will guide each session. Additionaly, prayerfully review your last month. What were the highs and lows. What events and relationships were significant? What needs, struggles, and questions were faced. You may notice a dominant theme: a thought, question, attitude or situation that has repeated itself throughout the month. If so, bring that to the session.

Practical Details of Spiritual Direction

  • In-person sessions are available for people in the Nashville Area. I meet remotely by Zoom, FaceTime, or WhatsApp.
  • Typically spiritual direction occurs once a month for about an hour. If needed, especially at the beginning of the process, this can be increased.
  • As a soul companion and shepherd, I am available to directees between sessions as time permits.
  • I want everyone to have access to spiritual direction. Therefore, I offer a sliding scale from $20 to $60.
  • We will begin with a free initial spiritual direction session and then discern together whether to commit to regular monthly sessions.
